Why Greenville?
The answer is simple. In Life 2.0 (published by Crown Publishing, 2004), Forbes magazine editor Rich Karlgaard writes that people can “live larger lives in smaller places.” And that’s precisely what Greenville allows. South Carolina’s Upstate—situated between the ocean and the mountains, and between Atlanta and Charlotte—offers balance. Here, people balance business and family priorities with the opportunity to live an active, healthy life in a climate that encourages year-round outdoor activities.
But Greenville is not distinguished simply by quality of life. The six-hundred mile Southeastern Innovation Corridor from Raleigh, NC to Birmingham, AL is roughly the same length top to bottom as from the San Francisco Bay Area to San Diego, CA. It is larger in population than any state except California, smaller in geography than Texas, and all within driving distance of South Carolina. Consider these highlights:
The Southeastern Innovation Corridor is home to international industry leaders including BMW, Michelin, Bosch, Royal Dutch Ahold, Fujifilm, Milliken, Kemet, and more.
Areas of strategic focus for the Corrridor, and particularly Upstate South Carolina, include advanced materials and nanotechnologies, automotive and transportation, fuel cells and next energy, and communications and information technologies.
Two national laboratories make their homes within the Southeastern Innovation Corridor —Oak Ridge National Labs and the Savannah River National Laboratory.
The Southeastern Innovation Corridor contains sixteen nationally-prominent research universities, including Duke, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Emory University, the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, the University of South Carolina and The Medical University of South Carolina.
The technological strengths of the Southeastern Innovation Corridor include automotive manufacturing, fuel cell and energy research, advanced materials and nanotechnology, and information and communications technologies.
Three major airports are located with easy driving distance of Greenville: Greenville-Spartanburg on Interstate 85 (GSP, minutes from downtown Greenville, BMW, and Michelin), Charlotte (CLT), and Atlanta (ATL). In addition, Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) accommodates a full range of private aircraft and business jets, with a terminal, aviation fuel, and aircraft services.
